Cadet Program: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cadet program?

Cadets are members who are minors (under 18).
The rules for cadets are slightly different than the rules for adult members.

Do I need a driver's license to join the squad?

No, but if you don't have a license, you will need to stay at the
building while on duty.

Do I really have to stay at the building
the whole time if I can't drive?

Yes., but you can still watch TV, do homework, play video games,
listen to music, read, or do pretty much anything you want when
you're not on a call.

How much time will I spend on duty?

Cadets cannot ride past 10 pm on a school night, and they can't
ride past midnight on weekends. Your shifts will be about four hours
(from, say, 6 to 10 pm
).

I really hate seeing blood. Should I join?

You can still join- most calls aren't accidents, and there is little
or no blood involved. If you feel nervous on a call, there's always
at least one other EMT present to help you (if not two or three).

Do I count as an EMT on a call?

If you are fully trained, you can perform the duties of an EMT under
supervision of an EMT 18 or older. You cannot help with vehicle
extrication or use other power tools if you are under 18, and you
cannot respond to certain types of incidents.
